Our little adventure didn’t lead us to a secret dungeon as I had hoped. Instead the letter instructed us to go to a hospital in the city’s central zone.
There, in an unassuming white room like that of any other patient we met the crown prince who wrote us a cheque to pay off the orphanages debts which it had incurred to pay taxes.
The prince had all but one of his limbs placed in a cast. He used his his free left hand to sign the cheque officialising the large transfer.
The crown prince looked distraught at the news of Ria’s death.
“With this father has made peace with the protesters impossible. Father, no the King, was not always like this…”
This was tragic but I struggled not to fidget to hide my impatience for not receiving some kind of reward for the trouble I had gone through. It felt like waiting for a video game cut scene to end. My patience paid off.
“Whatever has happened to him, it is clear that he is no condition to rule or whatever is left of it in this city I suppose.”
“By getting me involved in these protests, are you asking me to oppose my own father and potentially kill him?”
Elfina stayed silent at the prince’s question. And just as I was feeling like an intruder to this scene, the prince turned towards me.
“You, weary traveller from a far away country, have no prior connection to anyone in this city. You have my sincerest thanks for taking Elfina to Ria’s remains. I hear you are on the lookout for work… I have just the task for thee but first…”
The prince turned towards Elfina.
“Despite the incapacitated state I am in, I’ll ensure your sister, my betrothed shall receive a proper burial. I won’t say that this is me taking my responsibility because I have already failed at that by letting Ria be harmed.”
As far as I was aware the corpse was also hidden somewhere in the hospital, so it’s fair to say that the hospital staff are in with the Crown Prince.
The Crown Prince turned back to me.
“I cannot reward you now without drawing attention, even when I tried to help the orphanage indirectly by passing my funds to a foreign contact, the King’s agents were able to track that with a powerful magic and kill Ria… but rest assured will be rewarded handsomely.”
He then requested me to find out what to his father’s sudden change.
Bang!
Anger coursed through the prince’s frowning brows.
“Even if I have to punish my father with mine own hands, I must know why he did this, that is my duty as his son, as the crown prince!”
Later I found out from Elfina that the Crown Prince ended up incapacitated after being ambushed by thugs armed with magic spells while leaving the Parliament.
