I have been neglecting the Crown Prince’s faction while taking on jobs from the King’s side.
To redress this imbalance I met Elfina, who was, as usual, singing protest songs while playing a guitar like instrument. She stood in front of the fountain in the city’s square.
A boy, judging by his uniform, a commoner student from the adventurer’s Academy stood next to Elfina holding a placard reading “Free the People. Justice for Ria.”
“This is Workner. He’s an ally from the Academy.”
Elfina introduced us to each other.
“I am the proud son of workers from the North, and a willing member of the Crown Prince’s noble cause.”
The boy smiled.
“I heard how you helped save the orphanage from the clutches of the debt collectors by bring Elfina the Prince’s letter. Consider me a friend.
The de-industrialised North belonged mostly to the families of the rich commoners at the Academy rather than the Aristocratic faction.
There was a loud trumpet and a commotion at one of the entrances to the city square. A group of City Guards armed with magic spells easily cleared the square from the commoners armed mostly with sticks and knives. It turned out that I was the target of the City Guards.
I willingly surrendered as I didn’t want to become a fugitive. However before I was arrested Workner hurriedly gave me something before taking off along with Elfina.
“Take this pendant with you friend. It’ll protect you.”
The crime I was accused of was Ria’s murder.
The pendant, I was allowed to keep as the guards could not sense any magic from it and it looked too new to be an artefact but it was in fact an artefact, which I could only find out thanks to my inspect/appraise cheat skill.
I was tortured during the interrogation but the pendant healed my wounds and I hid that showing an illusion of my body using some magic of my own. The rest was taken care of by my acting.
