After a night of drinking, I decided to wake up. I raised my head and noticed from my analog clock in my office that it was almost noon. This type of thing is widespread since I hardly get any clients or visitors. Just so we’re on the same page, Scott Rook is my name, and this is my office. My small office is situated on the fourth floor of a five-story building.
In my office, there is a dark brown oak desk that contains half an empty bottle of whisky, a black unopened laptop, and a white ashtray that is filled to the brim with cigarette butts and ash. Behind the desk, there’s a window with a view of a dark brown apartment complex that is twelve stories high and filled with balconies. On the east side of the office, it features a light brown bulletin board and a black filing cabinet that is fifteen inches wide and five feet long. And in front of the desk is a small wooden black chair and a black metal coat rack.
And so, after I woke up, I decided to stand up from my chair and pace around the office. While doing so, I think to myself, “damn, how the hell did I get from being the top detective in my department to a lousy slouch who is in the process of being homeless?” A few minutes later, I heard a knock on the door. I proceed to sit down, and then I say, “Come in.”
The door opens, and a man walks in. This man is a tall, skinny, pale-looking man with an almond-shaped head. He appears in his mid-thirties with short dark brown hair and a chinstrap beard. He wears a black trench coat, beige dress pants, and black shoes. Afterward, the man stops at the front end of the office and says, “Ah, so this is where the world-famous detective resides!” He said with a sarcastic tone and a sleazy smile on his face. “I must say, you seem to be doing well for yourself.” After hearing this, I raise my right eyebrow and go, “Ha-ha, listen here, ass hole! If this is some idea of a joke, you can get the fuck out of my office!” I said in an aggressive tone.
The man grins and says, “Oh, not at all. I think you are the right man for this job, and I will propose it to you.” I roll my eyes, point to the chair, and say, “Alright, have a seat.” The man sits down, takes a vanilla-colored file from his trench coat, and goes. “Well Mr Rook, I am sure you’re familiar with an epidemic going on involving people overdosing on the new street drug called “soot” right? Well, a colleague of mine had recently become a victim of this overdose.”
He placed the file on my desk, and then I proceeded to open the file and examine the contents. This file contains an autopsy report, and a photo of the victim found at the crime scene. On the autopsy, it lists the person of interest as “John Morrison,” and it lists the cause of death as “cardiac arrest via drug overdose.” The crime scene shows an overweight man sitting on the asphalt ground with his back touching a red brick building. The man appears to be a slightly overweight young adult wearing a white dress shirt stained with vomit and black dress pants and shoes.
After perusing through the file I begin to say the following. “Well, it appears that your friend loves to party,” I said in a sarcastic tone. Then I reply with “If that were the case then you wouldn’t have brought this to me, isn’t that right..Mr?”
“For now, you can call me Benjamin. And yes, my associate is not the type to partake in such low-class behaviour as taking that type of drug. I suspect foul play. So, Mr Rook, would you be interested in pursuing this case further?”
After giving it some thought I decided to take this job. I based my decision on my dwindling bank account. And hey, even if this turns out to be a wild goose chase, I don’t have anything else to live for. “Okay, Benjamin, I will accept your case,” I said. Benjamin smiled and said, “Excellent; well, in that case, I have taken the liberty of wire transferring you some money for this case.”
Immediately after, he said I had received a notification on my phone. When I checked my phone, I saw that ten thousand dollars had been added to my business account. As soon as I read that, I immediately dropped my phone on the desk. “Ah, I see you have already received the money, excellent,” Benjamin said. “So, the next step is you will be flown to a city called “Sunrise City” which is the city where my colleague died. I already have your flight and lodging booked.” Benjamin said. “Well, I am sure that about covers everything. Good luck with your investigation.” He says with a smug look on his face.
After this exchange, Benjamin leaves my office. I then spend the next ten minutes contemplating my upcoming destination while I smoke three cigarettes. Sunrise is known as the “Vegas of the Northwest.” It is where people drain their life savings on booze and gambling and where the mafia makes most of their income. After a brief reflection, I put on my brown trench coat and exit my office. Generally, people in my profession would have their vehicle. But for me, I have sold my truck to pay for rent and my bills. God, it’s such a pain in the ass to commute on the bus. And so I commuted to and arrived at the airport. This marks the beginning of my investigation into Northwest Sin City and some surprises.
Feels like you wrote the summary first and wrote the chapter around it.
